The Backgammon Handbook
Looking for a good introductory book to Backgammon? Enno Heyken and Martin B. Fischer’s “The Backgammon Handbook”, first published in German in 1989 and translated into English for publication in 1990 by Corkwood Press, will serve you well. In this book the two internationally known Backgammon and Chess Players give us a complete tour through the basics of the game and some advance play principles, finishing by providing the complete score of, and some annotations on the 1987 match between Bill Robertie and Nack Ballard.
Although some feel “ The Backgammon Handbook” lacks the analytical and theoretical spirit only Backgammon players holding a Master rating can bestow upon a book, and that there are many misleading and incomplete advice offered in its pages, there is no doubt that it will be an excellent, inspiring start point for many serious novice players. The book includes some 350 diagrams that help the reader understand and absorb the ideas exposed in it more easily. It is also systematic in the way it is written and offers the readers the opportunity to test their understanding of the material by a series of test included in each of its chapters. For me, perhaps the best asset this book possesses is the fact that all the principles exposed in it are further being demonstrated through the annotations on Robertie and Ballard’s famous Reno match.
In conclusion, “The Backgammon Handbook” may not be the best book there is on Backgammon, but it is definitely one of the most recommended ones for beginners.
